"This Above All..." an Incarnate Act-Two Teaser...

May 30, 2013 - 23:46:00 GMT-05
Hub-4 - Radial-6 - Room-12

“Ms. Slade, let us begin with the last thing you remember, following the death of the allegedly “immortal” metahuman known as Robert Joseph Marshall.”

The room was metallic. This was true not only in the literal sense, but in the figurative as well. Everything about the place was sterile, cold,… and harsh. The brushed steel finish of the riveted wall-panels, the abrasive grating of the floor, even the gleaming, mirror-polish of the ceiling, broken only by six, evenly spaced halogen lights. Each of the lights glowed from within recessed alcoves covered by a thin sheet of steel mesh. Everything about the place bespoke of a world and a design unsympathetic to warm, fleshy, living things. The mind or minds behind it all seemed to hold a great deal of hostility toward anything… non-hostile.

The table, upon which Slade rested her throbbing head was a single piece of forged steel, apparently poured into a mold and allowed to cool into its final shape. The same was true of the chair that had been numbing all sensation from her legs and lower back for the last half-hour. She idly thought that this was what a frog or salamander must feel like, when pinned down to an examination table to be poked and prodded at with sharp instruments. How such a creature must long for moss and mud and warm, soft loam. How completely alien the examiners must seem. The opposite of comfort. The antithesis of hospitality.

The voice that had spoken to her, electronically modulated to conceal the interviewer’s identity, emanated from twin speakers, recessed like the halogens, into a pair of concavities on either side of the heavy, steel door that stood locked to her, preventing escape.

“Ms. Slade,” the voice began again, “are you with us?”

“Ms. Slade?” she responded, not lifting her head from the table. “Are you kidding me?”

“Is there something else you’d like me to call you?” the voice asked.

“What I’d like,” she began, as she stood from the table and grasped at the thin, institutional-gray fabric of her coverall-lapels, “is for you to give me my clothes back so I can get dressed.”

“Your clothing is being processed, Ms. Slade.”

“Processed?” she asked. Her toes curled and uncurled, testing the snugness of the dull-grey crocs on her feet. In spite of the thickness of their soles, they hadn’t prevented the chill of the metal floor from making it’s way up into her feet and legs, penetrating it seemed, all the way to the bone. She wondered idly at how long she’d been stuck in here.

“Scanned for radioactivity, decontaminated and laundered,” the voice explained, “when they are ready, they will be returned to you.” The electronic modulation made the voice sound, at various times, deep and light,… rough and smooth. It was like holding a conversation with an amoeboid entity incapable of retaining any single form for more than a few seconds. Whatever, or whomever was sitting, standing or coiling at the other end of the microphone, it seemed constantly to shift from hearty-giant, to squeaking mouse, to shrill harpy, to jovial angel,… and all points in between. Although somehow, the extensive sound-masking technology failed to hide the bored tone coloring the response. The space-age audio-tech also fell marginally short of concealing a basic template from becoming clear to her in the span of a few moments. True, she had no idea of the identity of this mysterious presence, but ‘Bored, Mid-Level Functionary Who’d Rather be Anywhere and Doing Anything Else,” came through to her as clear as a bell. As did, “Male,” “Mid-Thirties-to-Forties,” “Caucasian,” and “Educated on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.”

“Again, Ms. Slade,… the last thing you remember.”

She sighed.

“I remember falling,” she closed her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. “But, it didn’t feel like falling, at first. It felt like being pushed upward by a strong wind. There was a whistling, … a kind of howling in my ears. My eyes were dry and they itched a lot. My stomach felt,… queasy. It took me a few moments to realize that I was falling.”

“And before that?” the voice asked.

She sighed again, more roughly, taking no care to hide her frustration.
“Before that,… it’s all a blur. I can’t distinguish events from one another. Near as I can tell there was some kind of battle, that I apparently played a role in. But, I can’t remember what that role was, or why.” At that, she flopped back down into the chair. “Or how,” she piped-up, “I mean, I’m an accountant for Christ’s sake! I can barely open my car-door in the winter, if it’s iced-up.”

“Give us as clear a picture of those earlier events as you can,” the voice trilled then boomed.

“It’s not that simple,” she tried not to allow her tone to become a growl, in spite of the frustration that held her jaw tightly closed. “Most of what I remember,… even the parts that are in any kind of coherent sequence,… don’t make any sense.”

“Just try,” the voice chirped.

“Fine,” her response was more relaxed. She supposed she was running out of the requisite energy for rage. “Those people who were in the news a couple weeks ago,… they were calling them the ‘Ohio-Foursome.’”

“You refer to the cadre of metahumans composed of the entities known as Gerald Waldrop, Natasha Sharpe and the aforementioned Robert Marshall, now deceased,” the voice ululated.

“Yeah,” she said. “The ones involved in that near dust-up …slash stand-off with USMRC in New York,…” she’d intentionally pronounced the initialism as an acronym, ‘You-Smirk,’ as had become the common parlance in mass media over the last several days, following a particularly scathing satirical-commentary on the organization during the Season Premiere of a certain popular and subversive animated program on Comedy Central. “USMRC Because We’re Bad Liars” had seen ratings unmatched since “Trapped in the Closet” had aired the series’ brutal indictment of The Church of Scientology, nearly a decade prior.

“Anyway, the other man in the group,… Jerry… what was it, 'The Wall-Crusher?'” she asked.

“Waldrop,” it’s not a nom-de-guerre. It’s a surname. W-A-L-D-R-O-P,” the voice purred, then sang.

“Right,” she said, “whatever,… I remember he walked out of the building,”

“Which building?” the voice interrupted.

“The church,” she answered.

“Saint Bernard’s?” the voice inquired.

“No the *other* massive, floating church in downtown Akron,” she spat. “Do you want me to fucking get through this, or not?”

“Please continue,” the voice conceded.

“Actually,… he kind of stepped-out from underneath it,” she said, “and like,… walking it back over his hands as he emerged. The impression I had was that it had been him… he’d been the one lowering it back down to the ground. It was like, whatever it was that had been keeping it,… up… hovering in the sky like it was, had stopped or fizzled-out. I remember it dropped a few hundred feet or so, before something or someone… Waldrop, I assume,… had caught it up and lowered it very carefully back to the ground. Though it looked pretty beat-up. Not surprising, I guess. Stationary buildings aren’t designed to tolerate motion.”

“Did you see anything just *before* the church began to fall?” the voice asked. “Anything happening just outside of it?”

“It was very high up,” Slade shook her head. “It was also cloudy. I saw a lot of movement around it while it was still in the air, but I can’t remember anything specif…” she trailed off. Her eyes went unfocused and distant, as an image filled her mind.

“What was that, Ms. Slade?” the voice chirped.

In her mind’s eye, she saw a flash of red… or violet… very high up, just outside the front of the church, moments before it began to fall. She cleared her throat and sat up straight.

“I have a terrific headache,” she said. “Is there any chance I could get something for that? Aleve or Tylenol, maybe?”

“Someone will be along, shortly,” the voice replied.

Why had she done that, she wondered. Mislead them, like that. She had no real reason to. Cooperation, so far as she could tell would lead to a speedier release. She was annoyed at the detainment, but she couldn’t think of any reason to resist anyone working for…

Who?

It occurred to her with startling suddenness that she had no idea with whom she was speaking, not only in the specific but the general. She’d assumed that whomever was holding her, it was someone official,… someone in government or law enforcement. But, at the end of the day, someone she could trust. Now, however… she wondered.

“Which agency are you with, again?” she asked.

“We’re with Homeland Security,” the voice replied. “Please try to think. Was there anything else, just before the church began to fall?”

“Where is this place?” she went on.

“That’s classified information,” the voice replied. “It’s a secure facility. You needn’t know any more than that.”

“And when I’m released,… what? You’ll blindfold me?” she asked.

“Something like that,” the voice replied. “Your safety is assured, Ms. Slade, so long as you cooperate fully with us in this matter.”

“I think I’d like to speak to an attorney,” she said, the newly wary disposition creeping into the corners of her eyes.

“That is neither necessary, nor possible, Ms. Slade,” the voice ululated.

“What?” she said, suspicion giving way to renewed anger. “The hell it isn’t!”

“Ms. Slade, please understand that you are a person of interest in a suspected terrorist action against the United States. This is not a traffic violation or a noise complaint. You have no right to remain silent. You have no right to an attorney. You have no protection against searches, seizures nor any guarantee of a speedy trial.”

She sat back into her chair in a huff, her jaw slack and trembling, caught somewhere between fear, anger and hopelessness. The voice went on in its alien refusal to meet expectation. “Again, the more cordial you are, the more willingly you cooperate with us, the easier this process will be on you.”

A tear welled-up and rolled down her cheek, past her quivering lips.
“What do you want to know?” she asked, shaking her head in exasperation.

“We want to know everything you know about Robert Joseph Marshall,” the voice replied.

“Today,” she said, thumping an index finger against the cold, steel table-top, “Right now,… is the first time I’ve heard that name in any type of conversation. Prior to this, I’d only heard of him on the news.”

“Your personal computer’s registry indicates that you’ve researched him quite a bit,” the voice said.

“Of course I have,” she replied. “I’ve researched every metahuman I’ve heard of since the Event. Even moreso the ones that grew-up less than ten miles from my front door. Does that really make me unique enough to be a ‘person of interest?’”

“Not on its own. No,” the voice replied. “Are you a catholic, Ms. Slade?”

“No.”

“Then what were you doing at the church?”

She paused, staring at her hands.

She did not know.

From the Official Blog of Gerald Waldrop

I am War.
I killed a man – you’ve seen his skull split and spilling blood... Am I Evil?
I’ve killed billions and I will continue to kill. I am War. I’ve heard many discussions on the matter. Certainly as a living, feeling, sentient being, it is easy to see carnage and destruction in the aftermath of battle make the conclusion – War is Evil.
- - - -
...On with the action now, I'll strip your pride.
I'll spread your blood around, I'll see you ride.
Your face is scarred with steel, wounds deep and neat.
Like a double dozen before you, smells so sweet... – “Am I Evil?” by Metallica
- - - -

But is the question so simply answered? We could ponder the philosophical questions concerning “greater good” and “necessary evils”, but that is not the purpose of this writing. I will simply share my contemplation for our mutual benefit.

You see, war is a part of my nature. Love of violence has always been a part of humanity and our shared history; but it is more than that. War, in essence, is conflict - albeit on a grander scale. Conflict is an obvious, intrinsic part of nature. It is inherent in our physical laws. In physical trajectory as in thoughts/beliefs (of persons, societies, or nations) – when two things that do not move in the same direction come in contact, there will be an outcome... an end result of the interaction. Conflict is the process or means by which the end result is formed.

I do not seek destruction, or death. These are simply inevitabilities. I will not ignore the fact that they cause suffering – as bleeding hearts might raise protest by the notion that mankind should not be made to suffer... I will state this simply: The weak cry for their suffering. The strong, the determined - they embrace suffering... they learn and grow from it.

Death. Destruction. Suffering. These are pieces in the cyclical nature of reality/the universe... like pruning a tree, there are things which must be removed in order for the universe to continue as it should. They are necessities, but they are not always necessary... Do not mistake my words on the nature of conflict for cruel and uncaring.

I love. I care for others. I seek to protect and preserve. I am War. Dualistic nature is not a new concept. Not as a result of study of ancient religions/gods... and not within myself.
Can it be said that one should not defend his/her home and family? Friends, country, or way of life? When the machinations of the overly ambitious and greedy are left unchecked, they will come to take what is yours... they will try to hurt or kill you and the ones you love to take it. If you choose to NOT lay down and die, or for your loved ones to lay down and die, then you can understand the necessity of war.

“Am I Evil?” Those who would answer “Yes” and stop there... they fail to recognize how preservation can result from destruction. On a very fundamental level, if we do not preserve, we do not exist. On a more personal level, if I do not preserve, you and those I love will be destroyed. Oblivion is the ultimate end and evil. As long as there is conflict and war, there is existence ... there is life – and for that, IN that, you should celebrate.

For these reasons and more, I favor those who protect over those who seek destruction... Know this because, in time, you may come to know my favor... Those who recognize the truth in these things will be empowered... Embrace these words and begin to command the results of conflict.

You can hope for peace, but you know in your very essence that war is coming to everyone. When conflict arises, where will you be? With whom will you stand? He that knows war, determines conflict, and empowers those who follow.

Through me flows the energy of eons that gives light to the world and enables life. When you are in conflict you will call out “War, grant me your favor!” and where the light of day touches, I will see and judge your cause.

And when you war with another who believes he is just in his cause, you will both be judged, and I will ask “what have you done for me?”

Be worthy. Do not confuse wanton destruction or carnage for war. Do not claim war to be your ally when you simply want to take what belongs to another.

Share my words so that all will know, and all will become stronger. And when those who seek only death come, we will turn conflict on them and will preserve in their destruction.

From the Official Blog of Joe Marshall - 01

Entry Date: February 27, 2012 3:30 AM

Okay, this whole situation is fucked. Typhon chilling in a cold-fusion reactor just sucking up the juice while learning how to manipulate the power of the atom, the Engel breaking the terms of our truce with one of them ascending, and we still don't even have a grasp on what even caused all this in the first place. One of those gods claimed that El was killed by Typhon...but I'm pretty sure he's full of shit. The way the Engel seem to represent certain traits and virtues suggests to me that it's more likely that El was broken into pieces, or that his essence passed to his generals. El's resurrection could be truly horrible news if the stories we've all heard about him are true.

Oh hey! Didn't see you there =P My name is Joe and this is the first text entry to this new blog. You might be wondering what I was rambling about up there so let me lay a few things out for all those curious minds out there. There is so much more going on than you can even begin to grasp, and I've had the (mis)fortune of being close enough to see a lot of it. So let's start, shall we? I'm going to keep these brief, but I might go into detail in future entries if you readers show any interest.

-People all over the world have been manifesting powers (which you might know from the news) so FAR, this is likely to be divided into 2-3 groups...

--The first group of supernaturals are the Incarna--basically people that have powers that are similar in scope to the stories of the ancient Greek gods.

--In addition to a whole crop of average people becoming incarna, many (I've personally seen close to a dozen) of the "old" gods are once again walking the earth, (Heracles, Ares, Raiden, Hathor, and many more.)

--The second type of supernatural beings are simply Immortals--people that have had their soul awakened to a higher understanding of the universe and can wield "magic" powers.

--The "magic" of the immortals (which I'm going to call magic from now on) isn't really magic. It's just an effect of the immortal being able to influence the laws of reality through their deeper connection and understanding of it.

--*I* am one of the immortals. I have an understanding of matter and can completely transmute any type and state of matter to any other type or state. (Think Full Metal Alchemist but more powerful.)

-The big black thing in the Midwest US is a big no-no. A warning to the curious: unless you know how to work infernal magic (if you have to ask then you can't do it) you'll find yourself transported, quite literally, into hell if you go in there.

-The US government for the MOST part does have your best interests in mind.

-What most of the US government does NOT know is that there is a faction...I have no idea how large but they seem to have access to potentially unlimited resources--these people have a big plan in mind and they don't let things like ethics, morality, or freedom stop them from reaching towards this goal.

-The organization that EVERYONE should be worried about is called S.A.C.R.E.D. (Strategic Advance Covert Reconnaissance and Eugenics Directorate) If you hear that name then I'd suggest getting the hell out of wherever you are because if they get their hands on you, dying could be the least of your worries.

-As a bonus, and I'll even address this to any SACRED agents that might be reading this, if you can provide me with any good solid info on this group I will make you rich beyond your wildest fever dreams of avarice.

-Two of my friends (Jerry and Natasha) are Incarna, and the other (Megan) is...we'll just say vampire. She doesn't sparkle in the sun though, and trying to ask her about it is likely to get you eaten (not joking). I'll be trying to throw pictures of our misadventures on this blog as well, so you'll want to stay tuned!

-Once I discovered my powers, I had originally intended to try and help the government. We have been doing a lot to help out the government too, honestly.

We've been working with the military to stop the sort of ghastlies you should hope you never see.

-We ended the standoff between misguided patriots and the US government near a military base in the midwest (need to be vague here because I don't want to get anyone in trouble.)

-Our group just killed that ACTUAL terrorist that was threatening to nuke Washington DC, Sayim Omid Alinejad.

-Now that I know that there is a much darker side of the current government I made the decision to withdraw my direct offer of support to the government. I will still assist the military in keeping the peace, but I'm not going to risk providing materials to the enemy.

-My new goal is to help us all move towards a brighter future. I know that you may be scared out there, and there IS plenty of things that should scare you, but there are a lot of good people fighting the good fight to make sure we all get to wake up tomorrow. I'd rather help vastly accelerate research and development in technologies that will help all of mankind.

-If there are any researchers out there, especially those affiliated with a university, I am willing to use my abilities to provide materials and assistance for the right causes. I'll work this out on an individual basis with any interested parties but I can help furnish you with things like pure graphene in nearly any quantity, iridium, tritium, deuterium, carbon nanotubes, diamond, gold, etc. I can also create alloys of nearly any combination of elements, I would just need to see what the atomic or molecule structure looks like.

-That said I am going to need a lot of money to get my idea off the ground so payment of some kind will be required in nearly all cases. I will donate my services, however, if the project shows enough potential.

I've got a lot more to say, but if I spilled everything right now then you folks wouldn't have any reason to come back!

Seems like you guys have been busy!

Anyway, we miss you. You should stop in sometime. We just recently started a side-game of Promethean: The Created since Edge wouldn't stop bitching and moaning about it.

HAHAHAHA!! Jonny just said "More like Captain Glory-HOLE!" You gotta tag him when you hit town next!

Also, we've run into our share of weirdness. Been noticing a lot of attempts to breach our territory from the other side. We might be calling in an oh-shit airstrike from you and your heavy-hitters soon if things decide to go sideways.

It's all quiet for now, though. Hope to see you soon!

P.S. Edge says to bring Megan. He wants to be on her. HAHAHA He's printing out her picture,... I'm guessing so he can make it all sticky.

"Of Decay and Rejuvenation" - Chapter One Teaser

Night.
The East Coast.

If a moon could ever be described as cold and pitiless, it was the moon that hung over Vera Reed as she walked the midnight leg of her patrol northward along the shale saw-blade of Kilmarnock Sound’s least scenic stretch. Volley after volley of bone chilling winds gusted in from the bay, prompting her to draw the zipper of her heavy Techcorp Security parka all the way up, closing the high collar snug over her mouth. Surf occasionally pounded against the breakers hard enough to shower the asphalt footpaths under a mist that flash-froze into a hail of minuscule ice-chips as it glided over the several dozen yards between the breakwaters and the coastal proper. Vera thanked the stars she couldn’t see, that her shift was nearly over and, for the fifth or sixth time in the last several minutes, ran a gloved finger over the volume dial of her transceiver to make sure it was on full, lest she miss the duty officer’s call to order her in from the monochromatic hell for shift change.

As she reached the outer banks, she noted a faint wheeze disharmonizing her breaths. She paused for a moment, walking in place, and looked out over the bay. She’d not been with Techcorp long, but in the few months since she’d started, it had proven itself a decent enough gig. It allowed her to keep Ramen noodles, tuna fish and the occasional Chipotle burrito on the table while she worked on her doctoral thesis. Her stint in the Provost’s office at Yale had earned her enough respect with the right people to land her a job that both required and rewarded discretion. Full-time pay, a respectable margin above what was typical for the area, with part-time, third-shift hours to boot, had conspired to make the situation seem too good to be true, especially considering that the job consisted mostly of walking back and forth along the coast... something she was likely to have been doing in her free-time anyway. The sudden cruelty of tonight's nor'easter, however, was proving itself to be the insidious fine-print footing the Faustian contract.

“So little to do, so little to see,” she muttered. While bittersweet and a little snide, it hadn’t been a negative observation, per se. This was one of her favorite spots to stop and think… in weather that didn't frost the synapses at one's temples anyway. Tonight, she’d just have to cope. The outcropping was at the furthest reach of the outer bank of the compound. It curved eastward before hooking south, back toward shore, creating a little cape that almost closed itself off completely. Had it done so, it'd have been a tide-pool. A stone’s throw across, it yet left a stretch, several yards in width, open to the Atlantic. Vera left the path to pick her way across the rocks of the inlet, her arms crossed over her stomach, a disinterested gaze cast out over the black-and-gray expanse between herself and the horizon.

For the briefest of moments, a portion of the water’s surface, theretofore glassy and slowly undulating, stirred and frothed in wild abandon as a cluster of heavy, whip-like appendages lashed upward from out of the crawling shadows in the depths. Vera’s screams were muffled behind the vinyl warmth of her zippered collar as her body spun and tumbled head-over-heels. Her death, a dancing riot of horrors, reflected itself back up at her upon black waters. The sudden, wrenching of her torso, effortless as the turn of a radio dial, was the last sight she ever beheld. With a splash rendered almost inaudible by the concert of blizzard and crashing surf, three powerful tentacles yanked her broken and mangled corpse down into the sea.

To the west, beyond the calm swells of the inlet-come-watery-grave and the rhythmic thundering of the rocky coast, three nuclear cooling stacks reached toward heaven, glowing in the sickly ambiance of yellow security-lighting through the whirling, windblown rushes of snow.

Eversole: “Welcome to News Net Worldwide, for Friday, February tenth, two-thousand twelve. I am Robyn Eversole with tonight’s worldview.

“In the wake of recent events which many have described as catastrophic, others going so far as to dub ‘apocalyptic’ in nature, the country at large is still struggling to get our collective minds around everything that’s taken place. Obviously, there are many questions circling around in the public consciousness, not the least of which concerning the nature and scope of the apparently ‘superhuman’ phenomenon, upon which no two authorities seem able to agree.

“In hopes of gaining some ground toward addressing what has so far proved to be a nearly incomprehensible subject, I am joined this evening by Doctor Lawrence Perez, director of the National Science Foundation and recently appointed to the Obama Administration as chief advisor on what has been termed “Meta-Human Affairs.” Doctor, thank you very much for joining us this evening.”

Perez: “Thank you for having me.”

Eversole: “I guess our first question should be the most basic and perhaps the most difficult question; Just what is going on here?” *laughs*

Perez: *smiling* “Yes, that is the billion dollar question, isn’t it?”

Eversole: “Absolutely! I mean we’ve had reports coming in from all over the country describing and sometimes even *displaying* via cellular video recording, people performing amazing feats and surviving seemingly unsurvivable trauma. Everything from the man seen hovering, stationary above the south-end of Niagra Falls, to the woman who walked away from being hit by a speeding truck. Our network even has exclusive footage of Louis Dyson, the Virginia accountant who seems able to cause explosions equal to several tons of dynamite simply by thinking about them. As one of millions of still, ordinary, everyday human beings living in America, how can I come to grips with phenomena like this?”

Perez: “Well Robyn, first of all I would say that your best course of action and the most important thing to remember is the same as it would be in the wake of any serious crisis facing our country, that being; to remain calm and to keep an ear to the ground for updates. This network and other major news outlets like it are great sources for anyone wishing to remain apprised of what’s happening… which should be everyone… and how you could be affected.”

Eversole: “In other words, don’t exacerbate possible problems by overreacting.”

Perez: “Exactly. Secondly, I would remind everyone within the sound of my voice that these phenomena, while certainly impressive and widespread, are very sparse. By that I mean; the scope and scale of some of these phenomena, and the departure from normality that they seem to present, can make an event seem to be happening right next door. Keep some perspective on this. I mean, here you and I are, Robyn in midtown Manhattan, and the nearest Metahuman phenomenon to take place since the Event, happened over a week ago and nearly a hundred miles away. So, keep in mind that, so far as things have gone, you are more likely to be struck by lightning, indoors on a clear day than you are to find yourself within two hundred miles of an emergent Metahuman occurrence.”

Eversole: “How many such occurrences have been reported so far.”

Perez: “Well,… in answer to how many have been reported, there have been thousands. However, if you’re asking me how many have been verified, that number is far smaller… something in the arena of two-hundred fifty.”

Eversole: “Has there been any correlation between areas of the country and the number of occurrences?”

Perez: “That’s not really information that we have in hand, as yet. Numbers are still being crunched on that type of thing. We have however, made direct contact with several individual Metahumans, who’ve come forward to various state and national institutions and have asked for help in coming to grips with their situation.”

Eversole: “Can you give us any details?”

Perez: “Not as yet. Obviously the privacy of these individuals is one of our top priorities at this point. Part of the task I’ve been given along with my appointment to the administration is to coordinate contact and assistance to-and-between the Metahumans who have come in. I do have something of an announcement to make, however.”

Eversole: “Oh?”

Perez: “My department has been working on setting up a press conference with one of our Metahuman subjects these last few days. *holds up a hand to cut off Eversole’s next question* Now, when I say that we’re working on it, what I mean is that we are preparing the subject in question before approaching any news outlets or making any specific arrangements. You must understand that this person is still very much in the process of coming to grips with what’s happened to them. It’s important that they be ready and that they feel comfortable with going before a national, and possibly worldwide audience and sharing intimate details.”

Eversole: “Intimate?”

Perez: “Of course. Why is that strange?”

Eversole: *holding up his hands in a shrug* “Well,…”

Perez:“Imagine you’ve just been diagnosed with a drastic and life-changing condition. Speaking for myself, it would take me long enough to work up the nerve to talk to family about it. Far more so, a half-billion strangers.”

Eversole: *smiling* “Yeah,… but it’s not like these people have cancer or something like that.”

Perez: “It’s also not exactly like they’ve won the lottery. There are numerous things for these folks to consider, many of which haven’t even occurred to them as yet.”

Eversole: “Such as?”

Perez: “Well, expanding on my lottery-winner analogy; we’ve all heard the horror stories of how hitting the jackpot can cost you most of your friends and even close family as they come out of the woodwork looking for “their share,” assuming that blood-relation gives them some kind of claim on your windfall. Imagine that scenario, but now… the “jackpot” is something completely outside of human experience. It’s something that no amount of money could buy for you.”

Eversole: “You’d be dealing with a lot of envy.”

Perez: “Yes! And it tends to be an envy and jealousy that goes way deeper and to a more profound level than envy over lifestyle or the acquisition of a great job or a good looking mate. It becomes a kind of base-existential envy. A jealousy not of what you have but of what you are. The envious mind can be very eager to dehumanize the object of their obsession. Just look at what the masses have done in the past, to a Britney Spears or a Miley Cyrus. Once dehumanized, a person is far easier to see as an object or a material asset to be exploited. Of the Metahumans that we’ve been in contact with thus far, one of the most prevalent problems we’ve been seeing them deal with is death-threats. But, these aren’t just death-threats from anonymous strangers. Some have had death threats come from friends and even family after just a few exchanges over what they’re 'owed.'”

Eversole: “Wow…”

Perez: "Think about that for a moment. Think about that particular conviction; that... 'I'd rather have you die than see you become something I can't be,' coming not from a stranger in some remote corner of cyberspace, but rather from a cousin or uncle,... or even from a sibling. Not common. But, it's happening. It's out there."

Eversole: "Terrible!"

Perez: “Oh, it gets worse. One Metahuman gentleman’s twin brother committed suicide when he didn’t realize any special abilities even though his brother had. That man now has a mountain of guilt to deal with, that he doesn't even deserve. So, trust me, the situation is far more delicate for an emergent Metahuman than you may realize.”

Eversole: “Sounds like it. Well, we’ll certainly be eagerly awaiting the statements of the subject you’ve been prepping.”

Perez: *nods*

Eversole: “In a broader sense, how would you rate the presidential administration’s handling of things since the Event, so far?”

Perez: “Excellent. While certainly, there has been a tragic loss of life, as well as a great deal of confusion and paranoia throughout the country. It’s been a lot to come to terms with for everyone. However, I believe that the current administration has met the task as well as anyone could possibly be expected to. Great strides have already been made toward coming to grips with what’s happened and what may come tomorrow. All things considered, especially the fact that this situation is… *completely* and in no uncertain terms… unprecedented,… I would rate our President’s and his staff’s handling of things at one-hundred-ten percent of what anyone could reasonably have expected.”

Eversole: “What can you tell us about the nature of these phenomena? Where do they come from? What does it mean?”

Perez: *sits back and sips from his water before continuing* “That’s more difficult to answer. I can tell you that we have the best minds working on those particular questions as we speak. But, I’m afraid I don’t have anything specific to offer.”

Eversole: *sucks air through his teeth, smiling sheepishly*

Perez: *smiling and shaking his head* I know! That’s the last thing anyone watching this broadcast wants to still be hearing more than a month in, but it’s all we’ve got for you, at this time. I’m sorry. We’re examining everything from cellular mutation to quantum theory to… you-name-it. So far, and to be very frank, our facts are not much more extensive than those of anyone watching this show. But, we are exploring every reputable theory we have in hand, I can assure you.”

Eversole: “What’s next for you, at this point?”

Perez: “I’m actually meeting with the president later this evening to report on the current state of my department. After that, I’m heading to Virginia to meet with a panel of military commanders to discuss their findings.”

Eversole: “Doctor Perez, it’s been a pleasure having you. Thanks for coming.”

Perez: “Thank you for having me.”

A Long Way From Home

"However far modern science and technologies have fallen short of their inherent possibilities, they have taught mankind at least one lesson: Nothing is impossible."

-Lewis Mumford, Technics and Civilization, 1934.

Fall - 2010

There had always been an oddly threatening loveliness about the sinuous blacktops that coiled like the fossilized trails of ancient serpents about the forests of New England. The lonely paths, barren of even the hint of a painted line in center or at the shoulders, dark surface still glistening from an early-morning drizzle, seemed at once, inviting and foreboding, relaxing and disquieting. The slow mist rising from the asphalt and the needle-coated loam, carried the unmistakable scent of the macabre on chilly fingers that slithered and grasped through endless expanses of standing cedar and pine. She didn’t view it as unpleasant. Veronica had been raised on a steady diet of Stephen King since the fifth grade. “It,” “Needful Things,” “Storm of the Century;” these were mother’s milk to her. All the way up through grad-school, she’d always found comfort in the vaguely foreboding. For easing her troubles, relaxing her body as it stimulated her mind, there had never been a drug quite the equal of the first few chapters of a good thriller. It was the dimming of the lights and the raising of the curtain, when everything is still safe and sane and there’s only the hint of a chill down the spine, portending ominous things to come. To her innermost mind, it was the feeling of being home. It was her safe place within. Paradoxical,… but most human emotions were.

In spite of the King-ean surroundings, her efforts to linger upon the calm, steadying hum of the tires beneath her, long enough to slow her racing thoughts, proved fruitless. She supposed there was simply too much to do today, to throw energy after making oneself at home.

The Saab was well-used, a late 90s model with just over a hundred-fifty thousand miles on the odometer. In the few years since she’d taken it in the divorce settlement it’d truly become an extension of her. For the last several weeks, Malcolm had kept her on a fairly exhausting schedule, crisscrossing the continent, overseeing operations at some Oregon research installation one week and conducting a full performance-audit at the Miami division the next. Her apartment, a modest two-bedroom brownstone in San Francisco had become little more than a collection of wistful memories from the far-distant past of last month.

In open defiance of exhaustion, she’d always refused to fly. Airline travel required the checking off of a few too many items from her personal “no-go” list. Enclosed spaces and dizzying heights were bad enough, but turning full control over to someone else, and relying upon them to know what they were doing, well… there was a reason she’d gotten divorced.

The staff at the New York offices had been her personal endurance trial. The sheer frustration of the experience had, in her estimation, rated far above her pay-grade. She’d said as much on more than one of her nightly status-reports in the past week.

New York, after all had been the original home office, before Malcolm had decided to move his own little professional universe offshore. Now, the once-proud fifty story tower was nothing more than a broken-down ruin of its former glory and purpose, having degenerated into a den of malcontents. Where once had stood a bastion of scientific inquiry and capital-motivated research and development, there now crouched a seething hive of those who had not been worth promoting into lucrative and cushy positions on the island. The experience of watching colleagues who had hitherto been their equals and friends as they packed up and shipped off for a luxurious new life aboard a modern utopia with a two-hundred percent salary-upgrade and perks to match, had twisted those who’d not been selected, into the harpies and vipers that perched and slithered within the Big-Apple branch today. Malcolm’s administrative staff had seen to it that those among the ‘passed-over’ whom he’d wanted to keep, were paid just a bit too much for them to justify a leap into the unknown of unemployment or worse; taking a chance at another firm. They now occupied full-time salaried positions as professional malingerers who, in between venomous smoking-circle diatribes, also graciously found the time to keep the branch running at something vaguely resembling “up-to-spec.”

Most of the firm’s rank-and-file referred to Veronica and the four other “Special Liaisons” like her, as Malcom’s “Eyes,” as he turned his gaze from place to place, sifting through branch-roster after branch-roster, searching for those better fired than placated with “consolation-prize” pay-raises and/or miniscule stock option packages, in his as-yet unexplained and seemingly never-ending quest for more efficiency. No one truly understood it. She’d begun to have her doubts that Malcolm understood it himself. All anyone knew was that sometime around the fall of ’08, the boss had decided that the entire firm needed a massive, floor-to-ceiling overhaul, followed by a series of micro-managed tune-ups at each individual branch. More than one underappreciated middle-manager had remarked that it all boiled, very simply down to the billionaire version of the dreaded mid-life crisis. Malcolm had lush, full hair, the body of a nineteen year-old swimmer and he already owned two dozen sports cars. In addition, he had no trouble filling a bed frequently occupied by young movie starlets and international fashion models, and he had no wife to cheat on. So, when he’d hit fifty, the only way he’d been able to “act out” was through his company.

It made sense, as theories go. Amarna Industries LLC had been Malcolm’s entire life for as long as anyone could remember. So, when he’d decided to shake things up, without explaining to anyone why he was doing it, he’d ruffled a lot of feathers, particularly when he’d downgraded the branch which had been the backbone of Amarna, since the day the company had gone public.

Veronica’s visit, of course had given the New Yorkers an irresistible opportunity and platform upon which to vent. And vent they had. That entire week, Veronica had been little more than a stress-toy and, on occasion practically an effigy of Malcolm himself. It had never come to the point of firing anyone,… over the outbursts, that is. But, more than a few had been let-go as she’d conducted the grisly business of shutting down the departments on Malcolm’s kill-list. Not everyone was an economically viable choice for reassignment to other areas.

It was a strange thing, how people changed in the wake of bad news. One minute they’re in full possession of their faculties and able to see reason, the next they’re threatening everything from vandalism to whistle-blowing media-appearances to outright physical violence. Moments like those made one realize why no company ever fired security personnel during these downsizings and restructurings. In the end, she’d suffered through it, encouraging herself by looking forward to today.

Today was New Hampshire, Day 1, and all was right with the world.

The New Hampshire installation was nestled deep within the Acadian forests of the White Mountains, upstate. There was a lengthy break in the tree-line at the crest of Franconia Ridge. Veronica slowed the Saab to an idling 10mph and surveyed the compound with a coy smile. A fairly modest complex, (on the surface, anyway,) NH-1 occupied the southern foothills of Mount Flume. From atop the ridge, one had a commanding view of both the outer-treeline and the inner-complex. With its high walls, patrolled footpaths, numerous cameras and high-tension, electrified cables, the installation’s outward appearance conveyed a resonating message to any who looked upon it, in no uncertain terms.

That message was; “Go away.”

NH-1 staff was tasked with some of Malcolm’s most ambitious research initiatives and the eggheads-in-charge Loved him for it. Here, like everywhere else she’d been in the last month, she would be viewed as an extension of the boss himself. At NH-1, however, that would mean something very different than what it had meant anywhere else. Malcolm was definitely interested in keeping everything at NH-1 up and running. No one was slated for firing and she’d even been ordered to offer a handful of promotions to the senior staff. As a result, these people would treat her like a queen.

Coaxing the car back up to a timely pace, she lifted her cell-phone from where it sat atop the leather briefcase on the passenger seat, in anticipation of the call she knew would be coming-in at any moment. Three heartbeats later, it rang. She flipped it open and held it to her ear.

“Nice view?” Malcolm’s voice asked in its rich, continental baritone from the other end.

“Suitably intimidating,” she answered, smiling, not bothering to ask how he’d ‘guessed’ her exact location.

“Do you have everything you need,” he asked. “Or is there anything I can have sent from here?”

“Everything should be fine,” she said. “I went over the last few weekly reports at the motel this morning before I set out. From the tone of the footnotes, I gather that Doctor Michaels is more than ready for my line of inquiry.”

“I’m sure he is,” Malcolm replied, the roll of the eyes apparent in his tone. “The real question is whether or not we’re ready for his answers.”

“Well, when you’re right, you’re right,” Veronica sighed. “His team seems to be making rapid progress on just about every front. My only real area of concern is with something called,…” she trailed off, as she held the phone in place with her shoulder, flipped open her briefcase and rifled through the topmost layer of papers, fishing a specific, tightly-stapled sheaf from the stack. “Project: K7… sorry, Malcolm. I’m driving,” she adjusted her grip on the dossier and the steering-wheel before continuing. “K78-211. It’s mentioned here and there, but there are no actual reports on it in any of the materials.”

“Yes,…” Malcolm began, slowly. “You can blame me for that, Nicki. I didn’t want anything on that project going out electronically. It’s ‘eyes-only’ until further notice.”

“What is it?” she asked.

“It’s a new programming model for privacy management of cell-phone calls,” he responded dryly after a pause.

“Right,” she said. “Sorry.”

“They’ll explain everything when you arrive. Keep me posted, Nicki,” Malcolm said, his attention diverted by something that made him suppress a playful chuckle.

‘Great,’ Veronica thought. He’d brought another one home from the bar last night. The island was solely inhabited by employees and their families. If Malcolm was hooking up, it was almost certainly with someone who worked for him.

“Working on another sexual harassment suit, are we?” she asked.

“Always,” he said, tone simultaneously defensive and disarming. “I’ll talk to you soon.”

Smirking, she dropped the papers back into the briefcase, folded the phone closed and slipped it into her jacket pocket. Malcolm’s taste in sexual partners had always impressed her, but in the resoundingly negative.

It wasn’t jealously per se. Veronica was attractive, though in a wholly unremarkable way. She had long, golden hair and light blue eyes, with somewhat dulcet, understated features. Of which, ‘tall’ and ‘leggy’ were her two best, but she’d also never really lost her ‘freshman-fifteen.’ It had grabbed hold of her just below the waist and it’d stuck throughout college, grad-school and still clung to her thighs and padded-out the perimeter of her navel to this very day.

She’d had her fantasies about Malcolm here and there, (she was a red-blooded woman, after all,) but fantasies were all that they were. She’d come to value both their friendship and their professional relationship very highly,... and, professionally speaking, Malcolm was certainly onto something lately. She was sure of that. But, he had always carried with him a number of vices and she’d begun to feel more and more protective of his ego in the wake of all the financial turmoil in the country, and, of course the increasing media-scrutiny of big businesses over the last few years. Amarna had spent its fair share of time in the line of fire, though everyone top-tier had weathered it fairly well. Still, certain things had come to pass that she knew had gotten under Malcolm’s skin more than he was admitting to himself or anyone else. His foibles had, summarily intensified to a thus far manageable, if perhaps not-entirely appropriate degree. Between them as friends, there had been many a late night phone call, and even later-night drinks and conversations. There’d been ups and downs. Ironically, it’d left her with a sterner resentment of the hands working the public spotlight than Malcolm had ever harbored, himself. She wondered if developing a big-sister complex over a man old enough to be one’s father, was a matter worthy of a therapist's attention. Probably so, but there it was.

The man who stepped out of the outer guard-station was tall and handsome with features that were youthful on the whole, save perhaps for his eyes. They were far too serious for so young a man. It wasn’t the showy stoicism of a boy eager to prove himself, either. Rather, the tenable watchfulness that tasked the demeanor of those who knew from experience, just how dire and unforgiving the world could, so suddenly become. An M-16 assault rifle rode, slung over his shoulder with the relaxed familiarity of a mailbag upon its postman, as he approached Veronica’s window with a clipboard and a friendly nod. After checking her identification, then turning away and speaking briefly into the radio-receiver clipped to his lapel in stilted, codified terms that she couldn’t quite make-out over the sounds of car-engine mingled with oncoming weather, he waved her through the automated gate.

It lifted before her with a soft, repetitive, “tick-tack-tick-tack-tick-tack,” that reminded her, ominously she thought, of the sound a time-bomb always made in the last seconds before it changed the world, in all those old Hollywood spy-thrillers from the 50s and 60s.

Veronica eased the car into a brisk-but-safe 25mph along the hard concrete drive-path that lead around the side of the facility. The short trip took her past a security barracks, then around a motorcade that she’d guessed must have been converted from an aircraft hanger dating back to the site’s glory-days as an Airforce base from Truman through the end of the Cold War, and finally into a man-made meadow that cradled a cluster of small parking-lots situated in a fan-like formation about long, slim, single-story apartment buildings, an athletics and exercise center and a fairly new-looking commissary-house. In the backdrop of this homey little residential nodule, loomed the dark, military-grey shell of the NH-1 complex proper, and beyond, out of site through the evergreens and over the hills, was the faint and ever-present thunder of crashing surf from Franconia Bay.

She parked at the open spot closest to the main walk-up, and extinguished the engine. After snapping the latches on the briefcase closed and doing a final mascara-and-lipstick-check in the rearview mirror, she noticed a trio of figures walking quickly toward her down the footpath from the northern side of the complex. A balding, middle-aged man in a tweed sport coat with elbow-patches, and carrying a lab-coat slung over one arm, (Dr. Michaels, she guessed,) smiled broadly at her as he led two more young soldier-types with automatic rifles and thousand-yard stares to match that borne by the Gatekeeper.

Veronica gathered her things and climbed out of the car.

One of Malcolm's favorite sayings, (whether it had been quoted or an observation of his own, she had never been certain,) was that; "Every reach upward and onward contained the potential for a slip, and/or fall. The greater, the more ambitious the reach; the further and more hazardous the implicit drop." He usually followed it up with a few romanticized platitudes about the greatest fortunes being reserved by fate, for those bold enough to risk the greatest falls. "Who dares, wins," and all that. Though, among his squash partners it was usually phrased as "Gotta have balls bigger than the falls," or some-such backslapping, male-camaraderie fare. The timbre of the idea always hinged upon who he was speaking to. But, the underlying principle was the same, regardless.

Malcolm had made his fortune not by avoiding risk, but by learning to manage, and even to master it. But, were his personal hang-ups going to get the better of him right as he was attempting to balance and navigate his greatest risks to date? That was the question she hadn't been able to shake out of her mind ever since Malcolm had called her into his office three months ago and explained the over-arcing thrust of what was going on in New Hampshire.

NH-1 was viewed by the board as 'top-priority' among Amarna's R&D arsenal for good reason. She now stood within a short hike of a not insignificant portion of the world's brightest and most unconventional minds. They'd been gathered with the fastidious dedication of the truly obsessed backed by the seemingly endless funds of the unimaginably wealthy. The sum total of that collected acumen had been charged with some commensurately unorthodox enterprises. "Ambitious" did not begin to describe the various initiatives. To reflect on Malcolm's board-room, Toastmaster rhetoric, a proverbial "fall" from this height and they'd have time to take a nap before they hit the ground.

The happy task of playing Santa Clause with a bevy of promotions and pay-raises notwithstanding, there would indeed be a lot of serious matters to review and to evaluate in the next few days. The executive committee, (to say nothing of the boss himself) would expect nothing less than one-hundred percent accuracy in her findings.

She truly hoped Malcolm knew what he was doing.
More to the point, she hoped he knew what he was asking of her.
